Capgemini UK gains top European standard for environmental management

| Press release
Capgemini is only UK company in its sector to achieve top EU environmental certification

Capgemini UK plc has become the only UK company in the IT and professional services sector to gain the European ‘gold standard’ for environmental management with multi-site certification under the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).  Capgemini UK employs some 8,000 people at 17 sites across Britain and is part of the Capgemini Group, one of the world’s foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services.

Based on EU regulation, EMAS is recognised across Europe as the highest and most robust level of certification for environmental management, and is actively promoted by the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs  (DEFRA) and the European Commission for the Environment.  Its requirements exceed those of ISO 14001 which Capgemini UK achieved in 2009. The key aim of EMAS is to recognise and reward those organisations that go beyond minimal legal compliance and continuously improve their environmental performance.

Christine Hodgson, Chairman of Capgemini UK, commented:  “I am delighted that we have gained this important recognition. Strong environmental management is essential as we seek to safeguard the environment through reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, minimising waste and making the most efficient use of resources. We also recognise the importance of environmental performance to clients and other external stakeholders.

Capgemini UK’s EMAS certification follows a year in which the company has won a series of awards for sustainability achievements, including three ‘Big Tick’ awards from Business in the Community (for Climate Change, Sustainable Travel and Healthy Workplaces). Capgemini UK’s new Merlin data centre, widely regarded  as the world’s most sustainable, has won the International Green IT Award, and the European Green Data Centre Award.

Jon Hampson, Environment Director at Capgemini UK, said: “EMAS certification publicly reaffirms our commitment to continuously improving our environmental performance, and is another key milestone in our sustainability journey.
