Bristol City Council transforms online services with Drupal Open Source technology delivered by Capgemini

| Press release
Move to open systems brings new flexibility and is good news for local IT companies

Bristol City Council has improved its online services to local people and businesses following a comprehensive redevelopment of its website by a project team combining staff  from the council and Capgemini UK plc, part of the Capgemini Group, one of the world’s foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services. The project involved moving from an earlier-generation of open-source technology to a new website platform based on Drupal open source software.

The new technology gives the council the flexibility and freedom to add new online services now and in the future, including both interactive transactional facilities and expanded information content.

Gavin Beckett, Chief Enterprise Architect at Bristol City Council, said: ‘Moving to Drupal, with its extensive ecosystem of openly available modules and service providers, gives us the flexibility to enhance and extend the website in future to match changing customer needs. The streamlined website reduced the number of pages from 10,000 to 3,000 and makes searching for information, and completing transactions, much quicker, easier and more intuitive than previously.’

He added that the website transformation was one of a number of projects aimed at improving customer services for the people of Bristol, including those with and without online access.

The move to the widely supported open source platform Drupal is also good news for local web and digital media businesses in the Bristol area, since the council now has an expanding ‘ecosystem’ of local IT companies – currently numbering seven firms - involved in developing additional online services on its behalf. The Capgemini team working on the website project was based on-site at council offices and at one of Capgemini’s main centres in Bristol, where the company is a major local employer.

Chris Riches, Director for Local Government at Capgemini UK, said: ‘This is one of the first projects to be completed under Bristol City Council’s long-term contract with Capgemini, and we are naturally delighted that it has been a great success, with the number of visits to the website now topping some 300,000 per month.’

With the successful completion of the website transformation, Bristol City Council continues its leading role in the UK public sector use of open source systems.
