The Digital Platforms team produce web platforms for enterprise clients, providing complex solutions in content management, digital marketing, and e-commerce. Primarily working with Open Source software, the team are first and foremost engineers, putting Software Engineering and professionalism at the heart of delivery.

Main Purpose Of Role

(Daily Duties)

With continued growth of our accounts we would like you to work with some of our most valued customers. This will be an opportunity for you to display some of the following skills.

• You will be leading colleagues and collaborating with multiple suppliers on high-profile large-scale UK government projects.
• You will help lead a DevOps team of 60-plus people whose primary goal is to enable, accelerate and improve the work of ~300 developers and testers working on global web sites, large scale case management solutions, and sensitive integration hubs.
• You will be based on client site in Central London or Croydon.
• Your role will combine “doing” (e.g. developing harder, risky, or critically important work items) and “leading” (e.g. architecting new work items, coaching less experienced engineers, interviewing and onboarding new engineers).
• You will prompt and help implement improvements to an agile Scrum process, using the Atlassian suite (JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket, etc).
• At times, you may need to organise and lead your team members (and yourself) to work evenings, overnight or weekends, gaining agreement on shift patterns, time off in lieu, or extra pay.
• Improving and enhancing our automation of new environments using infrastructure as code and configuration management tools.
• Further developing our automated monitoring, discovery, logging and alerting systems for high scale production systems.
• You will provide expert support to our Continuous Integration and Delivery pipelines for Development teams.
• Design and create a platform based on containers using tools like Docker and Kubernetes, and help your teams and the development teams to adopt such tools.
• You will be involved in architectural direction of the platform, interfacing with client stakeholders and creating architecture documents that will be used by the engineers to build out infrastructure.
• You will be involved in creating and managing technical backlogs for the teams delivering platform improvements.
• Make systems more robust and scalable.

• Strong experience essential in automated environment provision and configuration management using tools such as Terraform, Jenkins, Ansible or Puppet.
• Strong experience essential in software packaging and dependency/version management, using tools such as GIT, RPM, Nexus.
• Able to architect and structure into Epics and Stories the environment and tooling needs of external developers and architects.
• Experience in engaging with different stakeholders not limited to but including client business and technology stakeholders, project managers, security architects, application architects and software engineers.
• Experience leading or managing teams using Scrum and JIRA, including leadership of scrum ceremonies (e.g. Sprint planning, daily stand-ups, end of sprint demonstration, retrospectives), liaison with product owners, and management of JIRA workflow and/or agile boards.
• In-depth experience essential in at least two of the following six areas:
o user access/identity management, using tools such as OpenLDAP & phpLDAPAdmin, SSH daemon, OpenVPN, PasswordManagerPro.
o monitoring tools, frameworks and processes, e.g. Zabbix, LogStash.
o database administration, using Hadoop, Postgres, Oracle.
o cloud infrastructure technologies such as AWS.
o networking, security, shell scripting, Ruby and Linux/CentOS.
o containerisation, using e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Rancher.
• Proven success at conceiving and/or implementing improvements in one or more aspects of DevOps tooling.
• Experienced working in multi-supplier teams within large scale projects.
• Professional leadership skills – e.g. good communicator, ability to influence and coach others, good leadership skills, good stakeholder management skills, able to solve problems, honesty and integrity, keen to learn, drive and energy.
• Either hold already, or be capable or gaining, UK government clearance to CTC as a minimum, and preferably SC level, which requires 5 years UK residency.

Salary £45,000 - £55,000 plus benefits
