Getting Digital: CDC in the public sector

I joined the Consultant Development Community (CDC) just under a year ago and in that time I have worked across multiple Public Sector clients. My roles have given me a wide range of exposure; from conducting research for a major welfare reform programme in my first few weeks, to leading a small team delivering analytical modelling support for the design of a Target Operating Model. The consulting journey has enabled me to develop real depth of knowledge in the public sector; my experience so far taken me from tax & benefits, to fraud prevention and, most recently, skills funding.

Capgemini and the CDC have supported me from the very start, enabling me to move through stretching roles that continue to challenge. My current engagement is allowing me to take this development even further and I am currently writing a business case for a Government agency based in the Midlands. Moving between different Public Sector clients, I’ve noticed several elements re-emerging: the increased collection and use of data, a requirement to reduce spend through more efficient ways of working and a genuine appetite to move front-end services online. This is all pointing towards a very real trend demonstrating the digital transformation of Government. Step by step, the Public Sector is becoming ‘digital by default’; moving services from offline to digital channels, with the citizen always at the centre.

This change agenda is further evidenced through the growing profile of the Cabinet Office’s Government Digital Services Unit, and a push for all technology projects to ensure the customer is at the centre. The Government’s customers – the 63 million people who make up the UK population – have begun a rapid transition to the digital world and Public Services must not be left behind. It’s a huge privilege to be part of this.

To assist the Government in delivering this vision, Capgemini have created a cross discipline unit – Capgemini Digital Government – which provides end to end digital services; with a view to help the Cabinet Office achieve its estimated £1.8 billion cost savings through the ‘digital by default’ agenda. I have been fortunate to play a part in establishing this new unit and it’s been an exciting journey; consolidating our expertise in the Public Sector with the opportunities presented by our approach to Digital Transformation.

The CDC has enabled me to do all this. I’ve been continuously stretched, led small teams and developed my own client relationships. What I love about the culture at Capgemini is that, with support, you are given real opportunities to assume responsibility and, most importantly, choose your own journey through the company.

Hi Lois, the CDC programme allows you to either rotate between our different capability teams, or stick to one and specialise from the start. My particular experience and skills has meant I've been a great fit for the DTBA team, but the training opportunities within the CDC ensure that everyone is equipped with both specific content knowledge and also a general consulting skillset that can be applied across roles.
