Our research into the digital literacy of young people launched yesterday (see the full press release here) highlighted the importance of digital literacy amongst young people, and the need for the private sector to take a lead role in supporting future generations. One of the initiatives that Capgemini is involved in is The Tech Partnership Badge Academy.
It is soon to be made available to all schools by the Tech Partnership, a network of employers, including Capgemini, which works to inspire young people about technology. The Tech Partnership Badge Academy encourages young people to build the tech skills employers value, by working towards open badges: these can be used to demonstrate a young person’s digital credentials to potential employers. Capgemini supports three badges, including ‘Crowdsourcing’, ‘Pitching an App’ and ‘Digital Maker’ (which has been created for young people working with The Prince’s Trust).
I asked Sue Nieland, Director of Education at Tech Partnership, to explain more: “The Tech Partnership is made up of employers from every sector of the economy, because every business is a digital business nowadays. This makes it all the more important that young people gain high-quality digital skills, whatever their career plans.
"The Tech Partnership Badge Academy is a ground-breaking way to develop and evidence the skills that employers need, and share them in a way that’s simple and straightforward for both sides. We hope young people will take advantage of the growing range of opportunities available to them to build a solid foundation in the digital skills, helping them land their dream job and realise their full potential professionally.”
The research into the digital literacy of young people and the impact on UK businesses was developed as part of a Digital Partnership with The Prince’s Trust, which will see Capgemini deliver a series of programmes teaching 600 of the most disadvantaged young people in the UK the skills necessary to develop a career in today’s digital economy.
