We retain our place in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women

Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2014In theory, all companies should offer equal opportunities for all of their employees. However, despite progress and legislation, not every company meets the requirements of women and enables them to fulfil their professional ambitions. To gain a place in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women, companies must be leading the way in gender equality in the workplace. The latest Top 50 has just been announced. To be considered for inclusion, businesses must submit detailed information about their internal processes, as well as evidence of external activities that promote gender equality, diversity and inclusion and create opportunities for women in a wider context. Each entry form is marked against a framework of best practice and assessed anonymously by a team of gender diversity experts within Opportunity Now, the campaign on gender diversity from Business in the Community. The Top 50 Employers for Women is unranked and the organisations selected to be on it are listed in alphabetical order.

Inclusion in The Times Top 50 Employers for Women means that the successful organisations demonstrated some or all of the following:
  • Strong leadership accountability for change
  • Commercial case that encompasses business success and delivery
  • Mainstreaming activity throughout multiple function areas and peer levels
  • Organisational target setting
  • Holding managers to account
  • Changing culture, including through mandatory unconscious bias training
  • Integration of workforce metrics into planning processes and strategy
  • Comprehensive agile working schemes delivering business benefit
  • Tangible impact with qualitative/ quantitative evidence
Christine Hodgson, Capgemini UK ChairmanSecuring our position in the Top 50 endorses the consistent efforts we have made to address gender diversity. As well as being an outstanding role model for women in business, UK Chairman Christine Hodgson is a tireless champion for diversity. At our latest Capgemini Women’s Business Network event, Christine announced two new gender diversity key performance indicators (KPIs) for Capgemini UK. Within five years we want to have increased our senior female headcount from 17% to 20%. In the same timeframe we want to raise our overall female headcount from 26% to 30%. These KPIs will enable us to measure our progress against our global Women@Capgemini programme ambition to recruit, develop and retain female talent.
In achieving these goals, we may also succeed in giving our industry a makeover. “Young girls think fashion or media is much more exciting than technology,” says Christine. “We have got to change perceptions like that, especially as, at 16+, girls currently outperform boys in IT-related subjects such as ICT, maths and physics. It may be unrealistic to think we will ever achieve a 50:50 balance, but with our internal women’s network and our work with local and national women’s business organisations, we are certainly doing our best. This accolade is not only very rewarding; it proves that we are on the right track.”

The standard of entries was incredibly high once again, and they should be hugely proud of their success. They are a great example of strong leadership; of how putting gender equality at the core of a business can create real, sustainable change for women, organisations and society as a whole. I hope other employers will be inspired by their work and use it to accelerate progress for women in their workforce.”
