£50,000 student debt? No thanks. I'm going to be an apprentice

It was National Apprenticeship Week from 3-7 March 2014. At Capgemini, we made the most of promoting our thriving programmes for higher and advanced apprentices to support this UK-wide initiative.
The success of our programmes and of our apprentices themselves have been written about in the 
Sunday Times [subscription required to read full article], Guardian Online and the Sun. The Sunday Times piece included an interview between journalist Ben Marlow and Anouska Ramsay, Capgemini’s Head of Talent, about how beneficial apprentices were to Capgemini. Anouska says: “the candidates have brought fresh thinking and innovation and lifted the mood of our organisation, particularly in technology. It is also much more cost effective to train from within”. Rebecca Plant, Head of Apprentices and Graduates, was also featured in
Guardian Online, as part of a roundtable discussion on the new apprenticeship policy. 

In an interview for LBC radio
one of our higher apprentices, Joe Moles spoke to Julia Hartley-Brewer about his experience at Capgemini and why he took the apprenticeship route over university.

Our first Higher Apprentice graduates

Our graduation event took place on Tuesday 4 March in our offices in Holborn, London. As well as celebrating the graduation of Capgemini’s first batch of higher apprentices, the event marked the launch of an exciting new partnership, the first of its kind in the UK, with Aston University, which will allow higher apprentices to step on to their second year of University using only their higher apprenticeship as their entry point to complete a Bsc (Hons) degree. The apprentices were joined by their parents, Capgemini’s UK Chairman Christine Hodgson, Aston University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Dame Julia King, as well as media representatives. The new partnership was covered in
Information Age, Computer World and Sourcing Focus. All articles focused on the partnership with Aston University and included quotes from Professor Dame Julia King. The news was also picked up by the Birmingham Post and Business Birmingham.
Finally, a blog from one of our other Higher Apprentices, Danielle Elliott, appeared in Computer Weekly’s
‘WITSend’ (Women in Technology) Blog. Danielle focused on why she chose to work for Capgemini, and what she has learnt so far.
