Online spending hits £10bn record

According to the latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index (eRSI), there has been a better than expected performance for online retail in November, with sales topping an estimated £10.1billion; the most the Index has ever recorded for a single month. Chris Webster, Vice President, Retail, CapgeminiThe story was picked up in national media, including The Daily Telegraph which focused on how online spending accelerated after Black Friday discounts. The Guardian also featured the news focusing on how UK internet shopping has hit a record high. Retail reporter Sarah Butler used various industry figures to support her article, but led with November eRSI results, and included comments from Capgemini’s Vice President, Retail, Chris Webster, stating that "e-retail continues to be the growth engine of an otherwise struggling retail sector".

City AM reported how online retailers took over £10bn of sales in November, including a reference to the data that multi-channel retailers fared best. There was also a standalone full article in the Daily Mirror which included a quote from IMRG.
 
The story was also covered in retail trade titles, including Retail Week, Marketing Week, Drapers, The Drum, Internet Retailing and Retail Gazette, which all focused on the fact that the monthly online spend had crossed the £10 billion mark for the first time in the Index’s history.
