The General Teaching Council for England (GTC) turned to Capgemini Consulting to provide both the systems and programme of change required to move forward at pace.

The independent GTC of England needed foolproof, well functioning systems to enable it to manage its register of teachers, collect membership revenue, and deliver service excellence. The GTC turned to Capgemini Consulting to provide both the systems and programme of change required to move forward at pace. The GTC’s new systems and ways of working are not only enabling almost 100% fee collection – up from just 85% – and delivering more accurate and integrated financial information, but are supporting highly effective two-way communications facilities with teachers via new channels.

The General Teaching Council for England is an independent self-regulating professional body advising Government on all matters relating to the teaching profession and working with teachers to ensure that its advice is based on practical experience and sound research. Its role includes: providing validation of teachers’ qualifications across England; handling tribunals and disciplinary proceedings; and providing an online forum for teachers to discuss policy and matters that affect their profession.

There was recognition that foolproof, well functioning systems were vital to enable the GTC to manage the register of teachers, collect membership revenue, and deliver service excellence. The GTC turned to Capgemini Consulting to provide both the systems and programme of change required to move forward at pace.

The General Teaching Council’s registrar Alan Meyrick describes the relationship with Capgemini as: “very supportive” adding, “It has enthused my staff with the desire to keep moving and going forward with change. They’ve been able to see that, with the support of Capgemini, the various processes we put in place have become reality and have improved the service they give to teachers and also the quality of their own jobs.” Among the key benefits of the consulting and technology solution delivered by Capgemini has been a significant increase in the mission-critical metric of fee collection rates from 80% to almost 100%.

Management now has easy access to information (detailed and summary) showing performance at all levels, trends in performance, and achievement against objectives. A new website accessible to all registered teachers has been set up and hit rates have confirmed its usefulness and popularity, in line with the Council’s aspiration to add value for the teaching profession and to promote knowledge-sharing.

In addition, new systems have been created to allow more effective processing each year of the country’s 30,000 newly qualified teachers, while the volume of manual work involved in correcting faulty, inaccurate or incomplete records has been substantially reduced, with a consequent reduction in operating costs.
