Organisation and Effectiveness

Organising for effective IT

Over the past five to ten years much of IT management’s effort has been spent on improving the cost effectiveness of IT through the centralisation of IT functions, targeted outsourcing and the harmonisation of systems to take advantage of global synergies. Today, these improvement areas are still important. However, to enable business excellence, CIOs need to focus on delivering cost efficiency, business flexibility and revenue generation through a more holistic approach to IT governance, IT organisation and IT processes.

At Capgemini we believe that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to delivering organisational effectiveness but that we can get faster results with greater improvements and lower risk through the application of our framework, which is based on hundreds of engagements with client organisations across the globe.

Capgemini has 350 management consultants across Europe specialising in Organisation and Effectiveness issues.

The benefits of Organisation and Effectiveness

Companies realise business value through redefining the strategic importance of the IT organisation.

The resulting improvements in the IT Operating model reduce the cost and improve the effectiveness of IT while also enabling business value, initiating innovation and increasing intimacy between the IT function and the business.

Capgemini’s Approach

Our methodology to ensure success redefines the strategic remit of the IT organisation, through a focus on:

Enabling business value:

The IT organisation develops, owns and maintains the appropriate governance structure within which the business can use IT to develop new concepts, propositions, client and user-interaction.

Initiating innovation:

The IT function takes responsibility for creating the systems and processes that will enable business innovation, in particular with reference to customer-facing application areas.

Increasing intimacy:

The IT function acts as an enabler so that, as the IT literacy of the business user population increases, business users can work proactively and in collaboration with IT to identify and develop value-based solutions.

Developing new sourcing models:

The IT function continues to improve the economic value of the organisation by leveraging a combination of on-shore, off-shore and outsourced models while at the same time increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the retained IT organisation.

Capgemini’s collaborative approach to delivering these benefits takes into consideration the traditional programme elements of governance, organisation and human factor management. The result is transformation programmes that deliver the portfolio of benefits the business expects from an IT organisation that is more agile and more intimate with the customer.

Success Story

A Global Consumer Products Company

As part of this firm’s new IT strategy, we developed a new IT vision which recognised the need to transform the IT operating model including IT organisational structure, processes, governance and KPIs. The existing organisation required additional planning capabilities to deliver the future IT vision and during the project it was discovered that the client’s IT costs were higher than those of industry peers, particularly in the area of labour costs. The large geographic spread of the business organisation required a broad spectrum of business relationship managers to cover the globe and deliver the new IT strategy, while there was a need to control costs and achieve clear governance. The project delivered clarity on how each major IT process should work end-to-end. The project deliverables included an integrated governance model, a KPI model based on best practice targeted to maximum business value, and an organisation model with job descriptions to deliver the new IT strategy successfully.
