Culture Change

"It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it…"

Organisational culture is very often simply described as ‘the way we do things around here’. Whilst this simplistic description is valid, culture is much more than this – it reflects the assumptions and beliefs of each individual member of staff, the procedures and ways of operating that are followed to ‘get the job done’ as well as the overarching values and the wider business goals of the organisation.

Capgemini has considerable experience of working collaboratively with clients to define, design and deliver cultural change programmes. In all cases, an assessment of current culture is required, as well as significant engagement with the executive team to determine the culture that the organisation aspires to achieve. An understanding of the current and ideal cultures allows for the design and delivery of appropriate change interventions to close the identified gaps.

The Benefits of Culture Change

Avoiding costly mistakes. Many businesses make expensive mistakes because they do not appropriately address challenges with organisational culture and behaviour. This is often evident in a disconnect between an organisation’s stated mission and vision and the types of behaviours that are predominant, with the style and ways of working in the organisation not delivering the desired results.

Improved morale amongst your people. Staff dissatisfaction is often driven by a lack of clarity of focus, aligned with an inconsistency of approach. This in turn has a knock on effect on the quality of customer experience. By developing a greater alignment amongst the leadership team in terms of the messages that are delivered, and the ways of working that are role modelled, a programme of cultural change enhance staff motivation, and in turn staff productivity and effectiveness.

Avoiding culture clashes. An inadequate response to the dynamic of managing and integrating diverse cultures is one of the major reasons why merger and acquisition activity tends to fail. New organisations need to put in at least as much effort into defining an appropriate new culture as they do in setting a new strategy or vision.

Capgemini’s approach

Capgemini knows that culture change is far more effective when bottom-up initiatives are aligned with top-down commitment. Our methodology is built on a 5 stage approach to Culture Change.

Diagnosis: We employ a range of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods to assess all layers of an organisation’s current culture.

Vision Development: We work with senior managers and all key stakeholders to develop a vision of the future culture and how it translates into expectations for day-to-day operation and interaction amongst staff and customers.

Gap Analysis: Working with our clients, we analyse the differences between the current culture and the desired culture and identify potential barriers to the transition.

The Culture Change: In collaboration with our clients, we develop a detailed transition plan to bring about culture change and then deliver on this plan through key tools and interventions, such as coaching leadership to champion and role model the changes required.

Evaluate and Reinforce: Working with our clients, we evaluate the effectiveness of the culture change and transfer our skills to allow changes to be reinforced.
