Capgemini’s approach
Capgemini’s core organisation design methods and tools enable both strategic and detailed design approaches, augmented by accelerated, concurrent design capabilities and supported by leading HR implementation capabilities to drive role change, TUPE application where appropriate and capability development where required.
Strategic organisation design is supported by our Organisational Configuration framework, which guides accelerated, top-down design through five steps, based on an understanding of the business environment and strategy:
- Align operations to business strategy
- Generate design options and target organisation model
- Cascade design and test interfaces
- Finalise roles and accountabilities
- Finalise end-to-end implementation plan
Throughout these five steps, Capgemini tests, iterates and improves design, and prioritises fast-track implementations, for ongoing realisation of benefits at the earliest opportunities possible.
Detailed organisation design is applied to a specific set of business activities defined or re-engineered through work on systems, processes or detailed operating models. Based on an understanding of those activities, Capgemini’s approach follows five steps:
- Identify business activities
- Align activities and roles
- Integrate jobs into organisation
- Size jobs based on roles
- Finalise job descriptions

Success stories
Major global consumer products manufacturer and distributor
Capgemini helped realise the benefits of global standardisation and supply chain simplification, by driving an organisation template into local structures that aligned diverse local requirements with a standard global model. The improvement agenda included work on accountabilities, organisational structure, capabilities for sustainability and clarification of the role of the global centre. Target benefits included £1bn cost savings through optimisation over five years, a consistent top team structure implemented across regions and aligned to the global centre and commitment and sponsorship of the change from the global top team.
Major UK national security programme
Capgemini Consulting designed and developed the top-to-bottom, end-to-end business architecture, business processes and target organisation design simultaneously, requiring accelerated and strict management of consistency, alignment and integration. Additionally, the end state design and interim state designs were developed in parallel, so that Capgemini had to manage tremendous ambiguity over the development and transformation plan. This approach allowed significant reduction in lead time and in the amount of re-work required, engendered deep understanding of the transformation route map and risks associated with roll-out of the new organisation and ensured continual stakeholder engagement and validation.
Major life sciences business
Capgemini supported transition of two merging business units into a single operating unit, through careful design and implementation of the new organisation. Within eight weeks—a timeline dictated by the client’s start of consultation with labour unions, Capgemini translated the target operating blueprint into a downsized organisation design, with a clarified service catalogue based on future client needs. Roles, relationships and governance were all captured in the new design, allowing the client to realise the benefits of the merger, including target headcount reduction of over £25mn and labour union support for the changes.
