Online spend surges 16% to £6bn

UK shoppers spent £6bn online in January, up 16% year on year, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Index.

Throughout the same month people spent an average of £118 online each.

The travel sector saw the biggest growth, hitting a 205% month-on-month increase since December, with the average spend topping £1,000 per person. The increase represents the highest amount spent by individual shoppers since 2008, according to IMRG Capgemini.

Sunshine.co.uk (pictured) co-founder and marketing director Chris Clarkson said, “It’s certainly encouraging to see a sales growth within the travel industry after a period within which it was suffering from some turbulence.”

Alcohol sales dropped 66% month on month as people cut back on drinking after Christmas, while clothing also saw a monthly drop of 38%.
