Carrying a heavy burden
The transport sector is a tough place to be. Organisations are struggling to cope with a number of external and internal factors that make doing business in the sector increasingly challenging.
Commercial passenger numbers are increasing, but so are the complaints that passengers are not getting value for money. A creaking road and rail infrastructure is badly in need of investment; in its current state, it impedes the smooth operation and efficiency of transport firms. Significant changes to PPP and the rail franchise set-up are striking at the heart of the rail industry, presenting huge challenges.
Add to that the ever-present threat to transport infrastructure from terrorism, especially in the aviation industry, and it’s clear that anyone in the transportation business must fully optimise their operations. Transport organisations need to be underpinned by an infrastructure that can support current needs and react to both planned and unforeseen change, as well as to future growth opportunities. But too many large scale infrastructure projects fail to deliver their promised benefits on time or within budget.
Capgemini can help transportation firms face up to the challenges of doing business in the current climate.

The Benefits of effective transportation solutions
Organisations that invest in a robust IT infrastructure become more efficient in their core business of transport. Costs are reduced and business processes are streamlined. The supply chain operating model can be transformed, with corresponding improvements in the value chain. At the same time, these organisations can make sure they get the best from their people.
New technology can extend the value of legacy systems, as well as supporting the move into new markets or opportunities.

Success stories
thetrainline
UK-based online ticket retailer thetrainline needed to refresh its IT infrastructure, which relied on older technology and lacked the ability to meet long-term business needs. Capgemini developed a strategy to migrate the existing system to a newer platform based on the Microsoft .NET Framework. In the process, thetrainline was able to reduce its server count from 180 to around 100, lowering system operation and maintenance costs. This new strategy provided a services architecture that enabled the core sub-systems within the solution to be changed without affecting the other sub-systems, or the external appearance of the website. ATOC reservation system
The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) in the UK needed a new National Reservations Service (NRS) to deliver enhanced levels of service to customers and operational benefits to Britain’s 26 train operating companies. Customers needed a more flexible system to cope with multi-journey reservations, while the train companies themselves needed better real-time data on bookings and carriage occupancy. Capgemini worked with ATOC to develop and deploy a state-of- the-art reservation system based on service oriented architecture (SOA) that would allow non-proprietary access to the service and its data. This system was successfully deployed in association with a complex network of stakeholders that included the 26 train operators, travel agents, five retail firms and nine other IT suppliers.
