In the wake of the recent slowdown, telcos are more cost-conscious than ever, but at the same time they urgently need to invest in infrastructure to support shorter time-to-market, greater business flexibility, and enhanced customer experience.

The reasons for change are not hard to identify. The market is totally saturated, and consumers are shifting rapidly to new behaviours, aided and abetted by technology providers: adoption of smart phones for example is expected to increase rapidly over the next two or three years.

This behavioural change has major implications for telcos, for example:

  • They have to bring new products to market as fast as possible if they are to secure their share of the benefits.
  • To monetise the new products, telcos will have to interact not just with their traditional customers but also with an increasing array of new partners, including advertisers, application developers, government, financial services providers and utilities.
  • Telcos need to accommodate changing expectations of customer service, with techniques like interactive text and “bot care” likely to be increasingly preferred to voice support in future.

Changes like these are pushing telcos towards new operating models, which require significant change to both business and infrastructure. But obviously it isn’t easy to make across-the-board change at a time of budgetary belt-tightening. And after the 3G experience, telcos are wary of trying to change everything at once, yet they also know that a piecemeal approach to making changes can result in a tangle of disparate systems and processes that can’t intercommunicate without a lot more work.
