Success Stories at DWP

Successful LEAN transformation

Capgemini is supporting DWP’s programme of continual improvement, providing input and assurance to the design, delivery and governance of the biggest Lean Transformation project in the UK. This is enabling departmental staff to achieve major process efficiencies and DWP is on track to meet or exceed its ambitious transformation targets.

Driving performance

DWP established itself at the vanguard of the Government’s new performance management regime, which put in place Departmental Strategic Objectives (DSOs) across Whitehall. Working with Capgemini enabled the Department to develop performance management framework which mapped inputs through to the activities carried out and products delivered to achieve its outputs and outcomes. As well as being one of the first departments to incorporate DSOs into the planning process, this has also identified ways in which resources can be deployed far more effectively.

Capability Development

Capgemini supported DWP’s response to a government-wide initiative for all departments to review their capability to underpin improvements in effectiveness. We were asked by top management to work with the Department in preparing for its review, carrying out extensive fact-fining and analysis across the organisation, leading onto a detailed gap analysis and the development of a robust action plan. This underpinned DWP’s strong performance in the subsequent Capability Review undertaken by the Cabinet Office and laid the foundation for a Department-wide improvement plan.

On-schedule launch of new service

DWP successfully launched the new Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) at the end of October 2008 following an intensive development programme carried out with business and technology advisory support from Capgemini. The ESA programme was one of the biggest and most complex challenges undertaken by the DWP and set a new standard for public sector transformation. Read the DWP press release.
