Capgemini Sailing Challenge

Round the island rally for charity

Friday 26th to Sunday 28th September 2008

On 27th September 2008, representatives from 20 police services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland swapped their uniforms for life jackets to sail around the Isle of Wight in support of the Capgemini Sailing Challenge, raising money for the crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers.

Teams were encouraged to raise as much money as possible for Crimestoppers through sponsorship of their crew; and together, the ambitious target of over £100,000 was well and truly smashed!!  To date monies collected stand at a fantastic £185,432 – with money still coming in.  With all costs covered by Capgemini, the consulting, technology and outsourcing firm, every penny goes direct to the charity.

Three Capgemini Challenge Trophies were awarded:

  • Rally Champions – awarded to Lancashire Police
  • Capgemini Innovation Award. This was won by Thames Valley Police, who raised over £33,000
  • Overall Challenge Champions – awarded to the Metropolitan Police Service which raised a magnificent £80,000 for the charity.

Helen Turnbull, Business Development Director, Capgemini comments, “We are overwhelmed by the level of support and enthusiasm for the challenge – both from within the police services and also from local business communities, sponsoring their team. We are absolutely delighted to have raised such a magnificent amount for the charity

Michael Laurie, CBE, Chief Executive of Crimestoppers, praised the efforts of the team behind the challenge: “The sailing challenge brought together our partners, the police and business. I am very grateful to all of them: to Capgemini for sponsoring this imaginative challenge and to the police forces who took part, raising a considerable deal of money to help us with our work.”

The event, organised to celebrate Crimestoppers’ twentieth year, complements the long term support and programme of activity that Capgemini has in place with the charity.
