Capgemini and FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) Launches Study on the Telecom Market Opportunities in Rural India in Association with Indian Government

New Delhi, India - Study published in association with FICCI and DoT at India Telecom 2008

11 December 2008

Appointed as this year’s Knowledge Partner for India Telecom 2008 by the Indian Department of Telecommunications and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Capgemini, one of the world’s foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services and FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry), today released the findings of ‘Connecting Rural India: The Untapped Growth Opportunity’, a study in connection with the exponential growth in telecoms services in rural India.  Didier Bonnet of Capgemini will launch the findings of the study with Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, during a ceremony at India Telecom 2008.

The conference will focus on how far improved broadband access will go into bridging the gap in unconnected rural India, as well as the next phase of opportunity for telecoms operators in the vast untapped rural markets of India. The report reveals that the strong growth seen in mobile telephony could be replicated across other telecom segments, such as broadband. Meanwhile, the advent of 3G networks is likely to drive a significant growth period of mobile broadband and advanced data services. The report also comments broadly on some of the key innovations the market will see develop in the coming year, as well as the regulatory and policy imperatives that the government has introduced to support the markets’ development.

Capgemini has strong telco expertise in India, providing strategic and operational consulting to global players entering into the local market, and addressing India’s telecom market as a viable investment option for them. In addition, Capgemini also advises Indian operators to further consolidate their position as local and global contenders.

“The Indian telecoms market is on the cusp of its next phase of growth, with rural India as the key new market that operators will be able to target for the first time. Given the untapped nature of the rural market, operators will need to take a strategic approach in order to compete effectively for the growing revenue opportunity. Operators will have to make key decisions regarding the cost of wireline infrastructure, as well as weighing up possibilities such as broadband and WiMAX” said said Didier Bonnet, MD & Global Head TME Consulting, Capgemini.

“With close to two-thirds of India’s one billion plus population living in rural areas or villages, the next big opportunity for the telecom sector lies in the hinterland. We are excited to be in this market, and believe that we can bring our global expertise to enable the Indian telecom sector players adequately tap this massive opportunity.” added Salil Parekh, CEO - Financial Services, India and Asia Pacific, Capgemini
