SOA means changing legacy more than building new

Capgemini announces series of new Outsourcing Solutions that build on existing Oracle business and Java applications

27 November 2006

Capgemini announces a series of new Outsourcing solutions that are focused on delivering continual value to companies, which will aim to build on businesses’ existing legacy systems.  Capgemini’s full lifecycle “CxO Fusion Experience” solutions are designed to ensure existing Oracle business (E-business Suite, i-flex, PeopleSoft, Siebel and JDEdwards) and Java applications to ensure that they continue to evolve and develop in line with the business.

The announcement emphasises Capgemini’s conviction that in order for SOA to deliver true value to organisations it must primarily impact on how existing systems are maintained and developed, rather than the new systems that build on them.  Capgemini believes that the current overriding focus of SOA investment on new technologies means some businesses risk seeing little value from SOA with few solutions delivering return on investment within a year.

Andy Mulholland, Global CTO, Capgemini, commented: “Business managers are rapidly realising that SOA is about redesigning and improving the way an enterprise can do business using new technologies, but they are also aware that this means having to consider their existing IT systems and expenditure as part of this change. With anything up to 80% of the budget going on existing IT operations this should be a target area for benefits too.”

Incorporating Capgemini’s “Business Aware Application management” and “Transformational SOA” product lines the new “CxO Fusion Experience” solutions ensure that new applications never become legacy problems and existing legacy can be transformed into dynamic systems that deliver additional business value.  Linked to these launches Capgemini also announced at the Enterprise SOA conference in Brussels, Belgium, a new approach to Outsourced solutions that used the concept of “Business Service Architecture” as its foundation.

“Business Service Architecture represents a new way of looking at IT investments. It provides instant clarity on what is important and what is not to help us focus effort on where SOA delivers most benefit to our clients” said Steve Jones, Head of SOA, Global Outsourcing, Capgemini. “Capgemini’s continual focus on business-driven SOA ensures that we are able to offer outsourcing solutions that aim to not only reduce cost, but more importantly deliver additional value to our clients.”

Capgemini has recently undertaken a global re-evaluation of its Outsourcing product strategies in line with a shift in Outsourcing engagements from the traditional “mega-deals” to a series of smaller multi-sourcing arrangements. The new “CxO Fusion Experience” enables Capgemini to provide solutions to large companies outsourcing all their IT to a single supplier, and also to deliver economies of scale to small and medium businesses.

“The demand from businesses is for flexibility and evolution, they want systems that keep pace with their businesses, not systems that are retired from development once they are operational,” said Glenn Adams, Global Product Director, Application management services, Capgemini. “Capgemini’s new portfolio of outsourcing solutions is aimed at this dynamically changing world.  We’ve always been able to deliver cost reduction, but over the last few years at many clients, such as the UK’s Inland Revenue and TXU in the US, we’ve been able to demonstrate that adding value to the top line while reducing the bottom line is a powerful combination.”

Capgemini has consistently been rated by analysts as being leaders in the SOA space, through membership of such high profile standards bodies as the OASIS SOA Reference Model, active participation in the Open Group’s SOA committee and OMG’s MDA groups Capgemini is helping to define the concept of business driven SOA.
