HMRC has one of the biggest IT spends in the UK and one of the most ambitions improvement programmes.

With more than 55m employer P14 annual returns, 6m tax credit renewals and 4m self-assessment forms completed online each year, HM Revenue & Customs is already seeing benefits from considerable spending on its internet services.

In this interview with CIO Deepak Singh, he talks about the department’s transformation programme, the fundamental cultural change the whole of the civil service that has to happen, and providing services to citizens and not merely focusing on compliance.

Deepak goes on to highlight the role Capgemini plays in helping to bring innovation into HMRC’s systems. According to Singh, the influx of new ideas and systems this generates is not merely “innovation for innovation’s sake” but “how we drive innovation into our business”.
