Carbon: Europe’s lessons for the US

Colette Lewiner, Global Energy, Utilities, and Chemicals Leader, Capgemini advises on the lessons the US can learn from Europe on reducing CO2.

With the economic downturn, the US should review the travails of Europe’s four-year-old carbon-trading system. Known as the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), the system is being used as a blueprint for the US model.

However Colette warns with the tumbling price of carbon credits in Europe since July 2008, the cost of the system is proving far greater than proposed.

The carbon price volatility has hurt long-term investment in renewables,” Colette comments. “When the price is so low, it plays no role in investment decisions concerning lower CO2-generating power plants.”
