Online shopping by UK consumers has broken all previous records with over £4.2
billion being spent in the last months. The release of the Capgemini IMRG e-Retail
Sales Index, shows that this equates to £69 for every person in the UK and represents
and increase of 46% compared to February 2007.
Anthoula commented that “in light of the clear pressures that the current economic
climate is placing on retailers, it is starting to see how online sales growth
shows no sign of abating. However, the global recesssion fear is a good reminder
that e-tailers cannot be complacent and need to be even more creative to keep
existing customers and attract new users. Innovation and the ability to provide
a truly integrated multi-channel offering will be vital to being one of the winners
through an economic slowdown.”

About the ‘IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index’
The IMRG Capgemini Index tracks ‘online sales’, which we define as ‘transactions completed fully, including payment, via interactive channels’ from any location, including in-store. These sales are predominantly internet-based today, but the Index remains ready to record e-Retail sales conducted via whatever interactive channels the market may embrace in the future.
