London tills shrug off credit crisis
IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index has revealed that UK shoppers are spending record amounts online. Anthoula Madden, Vice President, Consumer Products & Retail Team, Capgemini believes the Easter holidays paid dividends for retailers.

The recent credit crunch has seen shoppers avoid the high street and use online
channels to spend record amounts.
The index reveals online consumer spent a total of £13 billion online. Consumers
spent more than “50% more in the first quarter of 2008 than they did in the first
quarter of 2007.”
Anthoula believes that the “Easter weather appears to have paid off for online
retailers as more people seem to have spent more time inside, shopping online
in March. The latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index show
that the future is not all ‘doom and gloom for retailers – yet it underlines that
online is an essential channel for retailers to survive in such unstable conditions.”
