Capgemini today became the first global consultancy to offer major corporate clients Google’s web-based software as an another option to Microsoft Office.

The move is seen an endorsement for Google and the concept of ’software as a service’, where software applications are run and delivered using the internet rather than purchasing and maintaining their own systems.

The timing of the launch is significant as companies are making critical decisions on long-term technology upgrades. “People are receptive at this point in the cycle”, Andrew states.

‘Google Apps is not yet a genuine competitor to Microsoft because it does not have an equivalent range. However it is only a matter of time. At the moment, we see the two as complimentary because knowledge workers need Microsoft Office for the functionality. But in five years’ time the two will be true rivals.” Andrew goes onto to say.
