Welcome to the 2005 edition of the Vision & Reality study. This year our research has focused on the impact of increasing financial pressure on traditional models for healthcare.
The future of life sciences and healthcare companies will depend to a very large extent on the evolution of the healthcare environment. The key question is how the increasing demand for healthcare can be financed.
And this is independent from the existing models of healthcare systems. Whether tax-based, as for example in the UK and Scandinavia, solidarity-funded as in Germany or largely through individual payments such as in the US, funding of the increasing healthcare demand is not sustainable with current models. A reform of traditional healthcare systems therefore is a question of when not if.
That is why in this time of scarce resources, healthcare stakeholders are looking for new ways to contain healthcare costs, while increasing quality. These new approaches are largely based on health outcomes.
They look beyond the physiological measures of success to examine the multi-faceted effects of the healthcare process on patients and populations.
Health outcomes measure the value of the healthcare provided to individual patients and populations. The benefits and costs of healthcare are included in the equation to get an overall assessment. Benefits are measured in terms of health status, quality of life, customer satisfaction and put into perspective with the costs incurred across the entire continuum of care from prevention to outpatient and inpatient costs.
How will a focus on health outcomes help to overcome the financing crisis in this battle about allocation of funds? What will be the role of key stakeholders in the increasingly networked healthcare environment, e.g. patients, payers, physicians, pharmaceutical companies? How can collaboration between the key stakeholders of the industry provide ways out of the crisis?
Our research concentrated on potential scenarios that may unfold in the healthcare environment. Surveys with key stakeholder groups and exploratory workshops with out-of-the-box thinkers provide new insight into the impact of a health outcomes focus for the life sciences and healthcare industries. Further analysis and points of view from Capgemini’s Life Sciences and Healthcare practices complement the primary research.
We are very grateful for the contributions and encouraging comments we have received from hundreds of participants in this year’s study and we are proud to present our findings. We hope you find it stimulating reading.
