Lubricating Profit Enhancing Opportunities in an Oil Major

Capgemini deployed it’s Transformation Consulting method known as Analysis & Design to support the Lubricants Subsidiary of an Oil Major in identifying profit enhancing opportunities across the 40 countries. The CEO’s challenge was to reduce the total operating expenses by hundreds of millions of Dollars.

Capgemini utilised its international capabilities to globally coordinate parallel initiatives across three client regions (US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific). Our stream-leads worked with client counterparts to cover five key business areas: Supply Chain Logistics, Sourcing and Procurement, Sales & Marketing, Organisation Design, and Support Services such as Finance and IT.

Capgemini’s Analysis and Design (A&D) methodology was used to engage senior and middle management to achieve several key objectives:

  • Develop a robust portfolio of regional and global initiatives to reduce operating costs by hundreds of millions of dollars a year;
  • Ensure commitment and ownership of the portfolio of initiatives across the Shell senior and middle level management team;
  • Mobilise teams globally and running the regional components concurrently using the same methods and tools to ensure alignment of approach and consistency of deliverables.

Over the course of the engagement Capgemini consultants worked with more than 200 client counterparts to define detailed cost reduction opportunity projects, a transformation roadmap, and guiding principles for organisational redesign. 

Implementation was rapid progressing from Kick-Off to project commissioning in less than 3 months with a lean, Global PMO driving a hard focus on actions and results.  Over 120 improvement projects were launched globally delivering benefits that clearly exceeded the CEO’s challenging stretch targets.
