In today’s fast-moving and increasingly unpredictable business environment, the need for sustainability and ethical practices becomes ever more critical.
Issues such as climate change, environmental issues and social cohesion regularly dominate the media headlines. It is increasingly clear that businesses must play an important role in providing solutions to these issues.
Recognising that our responsibility as a business is wider than just our impact on the communities we work in, Capgemini UK launched its Sustainability Programme in 2007. The programme takes over from and accelerates the work we have been doing over the past years on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
The Capgemini UK Sustainability Programme will initially focus on:
- Our impact on the Environment
- Our impact on the Communities we operate in
- Our Employee Proposition
Underpinning our commitment of the business to the programme, a UK Sustainability Board was created, consisting of the Heads of each Discipline together with our HR Director, Company Secretary and chaired by the UK CFO.
August 2008 - Capgemini UK announces Environmental Commitments
Earlier this year Capgemini UK launched its Sustainability Programme. Our impact on the environment is perhaps the most complex to address. With support from an international environmental consultancy, we have made good progress in understanding our key environmental impacts and the most appropriate ways to focus our energies to reduce them.
We are now able to share the environmental commitments agreed with our executive Sustainability Board (1) for Capgemini in the UK:
- To reduce our overall CO2 footprint by 20% by 2014 (35% by 2020)
- To improve energy efficiency in our data centres by more than 20% by 2014
- To reduce our CO2 related to travel by more than 30% by 2014
- To send zero waste to landfill by 2014
- To implement an ISO14001 certified Environmental Management System (EMS) by the end of 2009
